Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) fertility treatment

There are many articles in the medical literature that examine the question of whether pregnancies induced using micromanipulation in vitro fertilization are at a greater risk for defects or genetic problems.

According to current knowledge, such pregnancies carry a slightly higher risk (2-3 times) compared to regular pregnancies (without ICSI) for chromosomal disorders other than Down syndrome, such as defects in the fetuss sex chromosomes (X or Y) or genetic imprinting.

However, research aimed at determining and defining the risks more accurately is still ongoing. For this type of fertility treatment it is advisable to ask the physician whether genetic counseling and/or prenatal diagnosis is required.
