Therapeutic termination of pregnancy (where termination is performed for medical reasons) is usually
carried out because a defect has been found, or there are signs indicative of a severe problem in the
fetus, or a genetic disease has been diagnosed.
In these cases, the couple should be referred to a genetic institute, with the results of the fetal autopsy,
if performed, chromosome tests, genetic tests, etc., for evaluation of the risk of recurrence and
recommendation of what tests should be performed before or during a future pregnancy.
This is usually done a month after the pregnancy is terminated, or alternatively before or right at the
beginning of another pregnancy.
